If a muscle does not reach failure after 25–30 reps, the load is likely too light to produce significant hypertrophy.

Therefore, most programs recommend training in the 8–15 rep range, close to failure, for optimal muscle growth.

For strength development, rep ranges are typically 1–5 reps per set, as loads are above ~80% of one-rep max (1RM). Training with higher reps generally focuses more on muscle size rather than maximal strength.

Load Differences

Hypertrophy training typically uses loads between 30% and 80% of 1RM, while strength training usually involves loads above 80% of 1RM.

Hypertrophy training works well alongside strength training and is often essential for optimal muscle growth and injury prevention.

Individuals focused on muscle size rather than maximal strength can prioritize hypertrophy training. However, they can later transition into strength-focused programs.

Who is Strength Training For?

Strength and hypertrophy training are not completely separate and often complement each other.

Athletes aiming for peak strength—whether for sports or competition—should train with heavier weights to adapt their nervous system. After a period, they may benefit from returning to hypertrophy training to reinforce muscle development.

For individuals not using very heavy loads, strength training can still improve neuromuscular efficiency and overall strength.
